A serene hot-spring retreat

In 1901, our founding proprietor Taminosaku Kobayashi opened the Kanbayashi Onsen in Nagano. The hot-spring inn he built was named "Jinpyokaku" by Kencho Suematsu. Wrapped in the silence of the surrounding trees, the inn has been beloved by countless writers and artists - among them Soseki Natsume, Akiko Yosano, Fumiko Hayashi and Yasunari Kawabata - as well as warriors, statesmen and members of the imperial family, down to the present day. Here you can savor the ultimate pleasure of reduction-rich spring water flowing freely from its source. Please enjoy this storied hot-spring inn, lovingly handed down for over a century through the Meiji, Taisho, Showa, Heisei and Reiwa eras.

Beyond the wooden main gate and a tree-lined path lie six dignified buildings that have watched over history. Here you can spend your time in a space of complete quiet and privacy. Forget the bustle of daily life and enjoy the rare luxury of having nothing to do at all.

Jinpyokaku is run by a yumori - a craftsman who serves as guardian of the hot spring. An onsen is a living thing, and so caring for it is never an easy task.

A Scenic Spot to Enjoy Nature and Wild Monkeys

The Jigokudani Monkey Park, famous for its endearing monkeys soaking in the hot springs amid the snow, lies in Yamanouchi Town at the foot of Shiga Kogen in northern Nagano. Though deep in the remote mountains, it draws visitors from all over the world year-round, each hoping to glimpse the adorable snow monkeys. Come and watch the wild monkeys against the scenery of every season.
