A silent hot-spring retreat
beloved of writers and artists
In 1901, the first innkeeper Tamisaku Kobayashi opened Kamishiro Onsen in Nagano.
The ryokan he built was later named
Jinpyokaku
by Kensuke Suematsu.
Surrounded by the quiet of the forest, our inn has been cherished by
Natsume Soseki, Yosano Akiko, Hayashi Fumiko, Yasunari Kawabata, and many other
writers, artists, soldiers, statesmen, and members of the imperial family—down to the present day.
Enjoy a reducing hot spring fed directly from the source.
For more than a century, through Meiji, Taisho, Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa,
we have preserved this historic onsen inn.
We hope you will enjoy your stay.

The silence writers loved
Pass through the wooden main gate and along a path through the trees.
Six dignified buildings, witnesses to history, offer
a space of silence and privacy.
Forget the noise of daily life and enjoy the luxury of doing nothing at all.

The finest rest and ease
Guests come here seeking rest when they are worn thin.
We want you to feel as comfortable as if you were home.
In every small detail—handmade and chosen by our okami—
you will find the spirit of hospitality.

History museum “Enjitsu”
On display are fusuma paintings from Natsume Soseki’s diary, writing desks used by
Hayashi Fumiko and Yasunari Kawabata, and other pieces
linked to Jinpyokaku.
The creative spirit they left here still shines
throughout the inn.
